Honda Civic Del Sol
Honda's entry into the two-seat sports car segment, the Civic del Sol, debuted
after the demise of the Honda Civic CRX. The uniquely styled Del Sol is a Civic-based
"semi convertible". It features a lift-off aluminum roof panel that opens to the
sun. The name Del Sol comes from the Spanish "of the sun". The
Civic Del Sol indeed added a sunny and fun-to-drive element to the Honda model lineup. With
the same front-drive running gear as the other Civics, the Del Sol was also the
first open-top Honda sold in the US.
It was offered in two trim levels. The base S model and the up level Si model.
The S model came standard with a 1.5 liter SOHC 16-valve four cylinder engine
and 13" wheels and tires. Meanwhile, the Si model offered a 1.6 liter SOHC 16-valve
four cylinder engine with Honda's VTEC technology. It also came with other features
such as a rear spoiler and floor mats. But the Civic Del Sol didn't really offer
impressive performance and the targa top was prone to leaks and noise.
